Getting a Divorce? Here is Why You Need to See a Doctor Now

The only professional you may think you need when getting a divorce is an Orlando family lawyer. It is true that legal representation can help you secure the settlement you deserve. However, there is another professional you should see at the start of the process, too. That is your doctor. Below are five reasons why you should make an appointment with your doctor soon after deciding it is time to divorce.

Get a Checkup

If it has been some time since you have had your last checkup, you may want to schedule one. Before financial decisions are made about alimony, child support, and other issues, you should know if you have any medical conditions that will force you to incur additional costs. Additionally, if you are currently receiving coverage from your spouse’s health insurance policy, waiting to learn of a medical issue may mean delaying it until you are no longer covered.

Refilling Prescriptions

Again, if you are on your spouse’s health insurance policy and that coverage will end when you get a divorce, now is the time to refill prescriptions. Some medications are very expensive, and divorce always has the potential to become costly, too. Refilling prescriptions while you still can, at little to no cost, will protect you and your finances.

Get a Drug Test

You may think your divorce is amicable. Even the friendliest of divorces though, have the potential to become contentious. Your spouse may eventually accuse you of drug use in an effort to complicate parenting time and time-sharing hearings. As such, anyone going through a divorce should get a drug test at the beginning to disprove any allegations against them, if it comes to that.

Get a Test for STDs

While this may seem drastic, it is not uncommon for a spouse to accuse the other of giving them an STD after they have had an affair. The best way to refute this argument is to show that you did not suffer from the condition at the time your marriage ended. The fact that you got a test, as well as the results, will remain confidential and so, no one needs to know about it unless you need it to become known.

Update Your Information

There is a good chance that when you started seeing your doctor several years ago, you listed your spouse as your emergency contact. Once your divorce is final, you likely do not want them to know your medical treatment, so it is important to update this information.
